How your study plan is structured
1. Learn
Approximately two-thirds of the schedule. Cover every syllabus topic on your exam paper in sequence, completing a short practice quiz after each study session.
2. Review
Approximately one-fifth of the schedule. Practice volume doubles, with emphasis on your weakest topics and previously missed questions.
3. Mock exams
The final weeks. Complete two full-length timed mock exams per week under exam conditions, and book your exam only after scoring 75% or higher on two.

Study planner FAQ
How long should I study for the 5th Class power engineering exam?
BoilerIQ recommends about 170 hours of preparation. At 7 hours per week, that is roughly 24 weeks; at 14 to 16 hours per week, about 12 weeks.
Does the planner cover 4th, 3rd, 2nd and 1st Class papers?
Yes. It includes every SOPEEC exam paper from 5th Class to 1st Class, including 4th Class Part A and Part B, all four 3rd Class papers, all six 2nd Class papers and all eight 1st Class papers.
What is the format of the power engineering exams?
5th to 2nd Class papers are multiple choice: 100 questions in 3 hours, with a 65% pass mark. Most 1st Class papers are long-answer: candidates answer 5 of 7 questions in 3½ hours. Paper 1B4 is multiple choice.

About this planner
Built by BoilerIQ, a Winnipeg-based power engineering company that supplies relief power engineers and Guarded Status coverage to Manitoba plants, and SOPEEC-aligned practice exams to students across Canada. Every plan is built and reviewed by our team of licensed power engineers, people who run boiler rooms and write these exams themselves, so the advice comes from the plant floor, not a textbook.
Exam paper topics and formats are based on the SOPEEC standard as published by TSASK (reviewed October 2026). Practice-question and mock-exam targets are BoilerIQ recommendations, not regulatory requirements. Confirm exam details with your provincial regulator before booking.
