Which Steam Plants Qualify?
According to Manitoba ITS, Guarded Status may apply to steam plants that meet one of the following conditions:
Low-Pressure Steam Plants
- •Safety relief valves set at 15 psig or lower
- •Greater than 50 boiler horsepower capacity
Medium-Pressure Steam Plants
- •Safety relief valves set above 15 psig but below 150 psig
- •Greater than 5 boiler horsepower
- •Not exceeding 50 boiler horsepower
Manitoba regulations clearly state that First Class, Second Class, and Third Class steam plants are not eligible for Guarded Status.
Which Refrigeration Plants Qualify?
Guarded Status may also apply to certain refrigeration plants:
Plants with Field-Erected Refrigerant Piping
- •High-side pressure greater than 15 psig
- •Capacity exceeding 50 tons
Factory-Built Refrigeration Plants
- •High-side pressure greater than 15 psig
- •Capacity exceeding 100 tons
- •Factory pressure and leak tested
- •No field-erected refrigerant piping connections
These eligibility requirements help ensure only suitable facilities are considered for reduced supervision arrangements.
